Call for Volunteers: Register by February 2
Dear Tufts Community:
Calling all volunteers! The Seventh Annual President's Marathon Challenge is in full swing. The men and women of the Tufts Team continue to train on the hills and streets of Medford, Arlington and Winchester to prepare for the 26.2-mile course from Hopkinton to Boston.
We have an opportunity for members of the Tufts community to support our team on Marathon Monday, April 20, 2009. As in previous years, Tufts volunteers are invited to staff aid stations along the course, while cheering on our runners. All volunteers receive official Boston Marathon jackets and Tufts hats. For those needing transportation, we will provide buses from the Medford/Somerville campus to the volunteer assignments.
The Boston Athletic Association, which oversees the marathon, will again handle volunteer registration. They require that all volunteers register directly through the BAA website (see important registration instructions below). Volunteers must register as soon as possible in order to reserve a space. The Tufts volunteer slots listed below are limited. If you volunteered last year, you will receive a separate email directly from the BAA. However, I encourage all volunteers to join one of the Tufts groups by going to the BAA website and following the instructions at the bottom of this message.
Volunteering is a wonderful way to experience the thrill of the Boston Marathon and to participate in one of the world's largest sporting events. While the duties are not as grueling as running more than 26 miles, you will be working hard and should be prepared to put in a full day. As we get closer to the date of the race, all volunteers will receive an e-mail from Tufts regarding transportation options to assigned locations. In the meantime, should you have any questions, please contact Meaghan Guziewicz at meaghan.guziewicz@tufts.edu or
Please sign up only if you are certain you are able to volunteer on Monday, April 20, 2009. The Boston Athletic Association, the Tufts Team, and all of the athletes running on Marathon Monday are counting on our volunteers to help make the Boston Marathon a spectacular event for all participants. Thank you for supporting our team.
Sincerely,
Lawrence S. Bacow

“There is much to be said about preparing for a marathon. Some coaches will take notice of proper nutrition, while others might highlight distance and pace. There are those who will encourage you to read articles and watch videos. And then there is Coach, with the most invaluable tip of all: Believe. Think positively. Trust yourself. Imagine that you really can do it – and then go ahead and fulfill your dreams.”
